"There must be something that catches your eye or intrigues you about the subject. It can be back-lighting, color, interesting roof lines, or the way the light hits the rocks or water.... A painter is more a poet than a journalist. Our goal as artists is not to merely record the facts. Be selective and edit elements--detail doesn't amount to a hill of beans if it doesn't contribute to the story you tell." Success Stories Ray Roberts and Matt Smith are part of Southwest Art's December 2009 article titled "Success Stories." Roberts' motto is "Eat, drink and sleep art."
