To receive your invitation go to The Haggin Museum.
A fabulous 92-page color catalog accompanies the exhibition, illustrating the more than 100 artworks that document grand vistas and intimate enclaves in some of the nation's most dramatic parks, monuments, recreation areas, parkways, and more!
Five outstanding Guest Artists--West Fraser, Walt Gonske, Quang Ho, Joseph McGurl, and Kathryn Stats--along with 30 PAPA members were charged with selecting a park and painting it on location. The National Park Service units represented in the exhibition stretch literally from the Atlantic to the Pacific and from the Mexican to Canadian borders. Artworks are for sale, including works created during a painting demonstration on the grounds of Stockton's beautiful Victory Park on Saturday morning, as well as a special group of works celebrating the Centennial of Zion National Park. His article “Paint, Easel, Bug Spray, Gun . . . Artists find that working outdoors can be a struggle against nature” chronicled hazards that ranged from Stephen Lyman’s tragic death hiking in the mountains to Walt Gonske’s use of mace. PAPA members Linda Tippetts and Ken Auster were also quoted. Tippetts brings a gun when she is in remote areas. "'I've been in places where I put my pistol on the easel,' she said. 'I've never had to use it, but I want people to see it's there.'" Ken Auster said that “he learned the hard way that purchasing a tides book made sense after he got caught on a beach between two rocky points when the tide was coming in and there was no way to get out other than to swim—he had to hold his easel, paint box and canvas above the water for several hours until the tide went back out. With many years of painting on beaches under his belt, Mr. Auster cautioned against using large canvases outdoors ('the wind blows them like a sail'), wearing flip-flops ('they kick sand up at the paintings as you walk'), and trying to pick off grains of sand that have been blown on the canvas by the wind: 'Don't touch it," he said. 'Just wait till it dries and the sand will fall off on its own.'"
