PAPA Plein-Air Lifetime Achievement Award Announced

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 14 APRIL 2012

On Saturday, 14 April  2012, the Plein-Air Painters of America announced the 2012 recipients of the PAPA Plein-Air Lifetime Achievement Awards. “We are honored to recognize Roy Rose as a  major contributor to the genre of plein-air painting in America,” said past PAPA President Kenn Backhaus at the recent Plein Air National Convention held in Las Vegas, NV.

COLLECTOR, WRITER, HISTORIAN. Roy Rose is an avid art collector, writer and historian who focused on early California impressionism for more than six decades. As the grandnephew of California impressionist Guy Rose, Roy began collecting and recording Guy’s art and life, resulting in a Catalog Raisonne and major exhibition in 1995.

In 1986, Roy worked with Avalon, CA, artist Denise Burns in the first Plein-Air Painters of America exhibition on Catalina Island. In the more than two decades to follow, he helped promote contemporary plein-air painters and collected their art.

LIVING ARTISTS. In the mid-1990s, Rose was among the founders of the nonprofit Society for the Advancement of Plein Air Painting (SAPAP) whose mission was to: “To educate the public in the art of plein air painting, both its historical roots and the living artists who work in the field, in order to increase the appreciation of fine art and also to encourage young artists to enter the field of plein air painting. The organization desires to preserve the traditions and methods of plein air painting.” With proceeds from the annual PAPA Catalina exhibition, SAPAP published in 2003 Enchanted Isle: A History of Plein Air Painting on Santa Catalina Island with essays by Jean Stern, Roy Rose and Molly Siple.

PRESERVATIONIST. Rose is also a lifetime member of the Catalina Island Conservancy, which has held an annual exhibition of contemporary plein-air artists, the proceeds of which are targeted toward a permanent gallery of art documenting the environment on Catalina Island.
